Recently I’ve had a bunch of time for side projects so I thought I’d take a computer science class. I was looking for a fairly rigorous one and didn’t mind picking up some other languages. Harvard’s CS50 at edX has great reviews, so that’s the one I started.
Our first assignment was to build something in Scratch, which I have never used before. It was a bit cumbersome because I’ve never programmed in a language like Scratch before.

Some Thoughts on Learning Clojure

This year, I was supposed to learn Clojure. I told myself that I was going to. I had been planning to pick up another language that is very different from Ruby and round out my skillset a bit.
Over the past few years a bunch of people have told me that I would probably like Lisp. I’ve also been reading a book in Scheme, and Clojure’s pretty much close enough. A bit more useful for web stuff, too.

How I Became a Software Developer Part 1

I don’t know if it’s all the nostalgia for the 90s going around lately, but I’ve had a bunch of conversations with other developers that got me thinking about my early years in web development. Back in 1998 I made tons of random websites with hilarious CSS, absolutely insane JavaScript, and crazy background wallpapers. I made them mostly with Geocities and Angelfire, and they were part of so many web rings.

The Floor is Lava
A game made with Scratch. You play as a dinosaur that must jump from rock to rock in a lava field. If you take too long to jump to the next rock it’s game over.
Plebs Dept. · GitHub API
Tiny Clojure API that only has one endpoint. It returns up to 30 trendy fashion products from one of five randomly selected current trends. The front-end is a separate static site using Masonry.

Learn Ruby the Hard Way Again

More than a year ago I tweeted (with a broken link to my old Octopress) about going through Learn Ruby the Hard Way again because I never finished it. I went up to #44 and stopped because I have no ideas for games, and #45 is the make a game exercise.
I started again last fall and am up to #11. At least I’ve learned to keep the completed exercises in a GitHub repo so I don’t lose them in the depths of my computer.

My first code blog was built on Octopress 2. It was a great starter blog, but I’ve been wanting to make some changes for a while. I got tired of waiting for Octopress 3, so I’m relaunching with Hugo, which looks like it has an active community and some great documentation.
I had planned on migrating my posts, but decided on a fresh start instead.
Hello, world.
